A Month for the Heart

February is a month that highlights two significant aspects of our lives—Heart Health Awareness Month and Valentine’s Day, the celebration of love. It’s interesting how both focus on the heart—one reminding us to care for our physical well-being, the other encouraging us to share our hearts with the right person. Just as we prioritize regular heart checkups for our physical health, we should also take time to evaluate our emotional and spiritual hearts in relationships.

Checking Your Heart in Relationships

In relationships, we sometimes overlook the importance of guarding our hearts. We fail to protect them from unnecessary pain, forgetting that just like our physical hearts, our emotional hearts require care and attention. It is essential to check your heart regularly, ensuring that you are connected to the right person—someone who nurtures, respects, and values your love.

I know firsthand what it feels like to be connected to the right person. Kevin and I started as high school sweethearts, and even at a young age, our hearts were deeply intertwined. Our love was not about perfection, but about commitment, growth, and protection. We made it a priority to safeguard each other’s hearts from unnecessary pain. Yet, like any couple, we faced challenges. When life tested us and our hearts were broken, we turned to God for renewal and strength. Because our foundation was built on true love and faith, we overcame our storms together.

Guarding Your Heart with Wisdom

If February teaches us anything, it’s that heart care—both physical and emotional—must be intentional. Just as we schedule annual checkups with a doctor, we should also take time to reflect on the condition of our hearts in relationships. Are we nurturing them with love, kindness, and patience? Are we allowing God to guide us toward the right person, someone who will protect and cherish our hearts?

So this month, as you celebrate love, remember to care for your heart. Check it. Guard it. Trust God to connect you with someone who will love you unconditionally.
